La Conner is a picturesque small town located in the delta at the mouth of the Skagit River. Skagit County’s oldest community, La Conner was first settled by non-natives in the 1860’s. Early settlers built dikes and thereby created hundreds of acres of some of the best farmland in the world. Early La Conner was a steamship hub, with logging and fishing until the depression. Today, the area is home to the Swinomish Tribal Community and the Shelter Bay neighborhood is across the channel from downtown. The modern La Conner is now home to a mix of fishermen, farmers, retirees, and a variety of artists and craftspeople. The town has an eclectic mix of restaurants, B&B’s, shops and galleries. You can also enjoy the scenic area’s natural beauty. Swans and Canadian geese winter here, as well as the town’s wild turkeys! The farmlands continue to produce food and seed crops, and they are a prime area for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. There’s a lot to do in La Conner, like these recommended by their Chamber of Commerce. But don’t miss the statue of “Dirty Biter”. La Conner has some beautiful homes – everything from turn of the century to modern, farmhouses to waterfront.
